I took version 1 of this mix, resampled it to 150% and 300% of the original length, and then mixed the two in various ways. I like it much more than the original mix.

Edit: That sudden volume drop near the beginning is strange. It seems to only happen when I export from Adobe Audition direct to MP3. The PCM output sounds fine. I guess it doesn't like going from one track of audio to two tracks of audio. I just realized that it did that on v1 as well. I understand why it would do that (going from one track at 100% amplitude to two tracks at 50% each) but why only when exporting direct to MP3? Strange. Time to fix that. I prefer the LAME encoder anyway. ...Or I could just fill in blank spots with silence like in the old days, but I really shouldn't have to.

I took the audio from the version 2 mix and made three new versions through the following three Adobe Audition effects:

1. Center Channel Extractor. It is designed to boost/cut vocals, i.e. making karaoke tracks or a capella mixes. But it has some wonderful advanced options that allow for some rather different results. It sounds like I did some crazy EQing and compressing, but I've actually removed some midrange with some precision sloppy FFTing. Beautiful.

2. Noise Reduction. It gives you the ability to capture a noise reduction profile to be removed from a track, such as hum or tape hiss, or in this case: the entire track. Then you can draw a frequency plot determining which frequency bands you'll reduce the most. Then you can invert the result, i.e. keep the "noise." So I've dumped the midrange, which leaves a very strangely liquidy bass and treble left behind with, of course, more hideously gorgeous FFT artifacts.

3. Hard Limiting. This one is simple and great. You pick a max output amplitude and an input gain, and you get a louder output with some strange compressor enduced pumping and breathing. Those are technical terms, as a matter of fact.

So I mixed together the three results of those three effects and the end resuls is a compressed, EQed, and trashed version of the original that sounds the same, but way way better.

I'm glad I put version 1 of this remix up last night (yesterday morning) so I would feel embarassed about how bad it was and make it better.

Oh, and I'm still getting that stupid volume drop after the first measure (or rather the first measure is boosted) only in the MP3 versions and not in the PCM. Grrrrrr.

Man, I'm listening to this again, and it really sounds like it's been attacked by a cheese grater or something.
