Today, new state laws go into effect which ban many items, especially things containing mercury, from being put in a trash can. This includes batteries, fluorescent bulbs, thermostats, etc.
Here are two press releases for some more info. While these may be more San Francisco-specific, I think most of this is state-wide. One of them is only available as a Word doc (duh) so I made a PDF of it. I really only did this so you can behold how the digital information is made from "100% Post-Consumer Content." Ha!

"If they do it knowingly, they could expect fines as much as $25,000 per day or they could expect criminal prosecution."
This is especially important for people who run businesses (or who soon will -- that means you,
