Good times at the vintage computer fest. The Scanimate video was great, even if the sound was down too low to drown out the noise of the people talking over a PA at the other end of the room. Well, the video wasn't so much great as an interesting story told by a guy who was obviously not a documentary editor or story teller. Some of the anecdotes were interesting and the video graphics were quite entertaining in their cheezy glory.

Talked to Brian Kehew of MOOG Cookbook for a while, which was cool. He's a really nice guy. Apparently there's a third MOOG Cookbook album out, which I was totally unaware of. We discussed the Con Brio for a while, and I was really impressed by it.

The Con Brio was and is a really incredible machine. I like that its control panel has a dedicated button for each function. No menus, no hidden features, just straightforward and awesome. Each voice consists of up to 16 digital oscillators that can modulate each other in an just about any way. It can generate up to 64 unique voices, each made up of 16 oscillators. So it can do additive synthesis, frequency modulation, amplitude modulation, and any mix of the above. Really flexible and some incredible sounds. Amazingly advanced for its time, too. Unfortunately, the keyboard wasn't working just then, so they could only play pre-recorded sequences off of 8" floppies. Still a good time.

While checking out the Con Brio I ran into an old friend, Sondra from KDVS. Good to see her again because I'd forgotten her last name and didn't know if we'd ever get back in touch.

Also, I just realized I may have been sitting right behind [livejournal.com profile] bdu through the whole movie. Was that you in the Haujobb shirt?
